Do
you think you’re too fat/ugly/poor/stupid? Are you proud that you’re a straight A student/wonderful
parent/great lover? Do you
worry that you’re genetically predisposed to get breast cancer/high
cholesterol/varicose veins? Are you the victim of a bad childhood/an
abusive marriage/the evil terrorists? Welcome, welcome, welcome to the land of illusions! Shakespeare said "all the world’s a stage" and he was
right. Just like the cast members on All My Children, we all tell
ourselves stories and then act them out every single day. Some of our stories are good and some are bad. Some we love so much that we stick with them our whole lives, while
others we make up as we go along. Some
we’ve proudly thought up for ourselves, others we’ve simply inherited
from other people. But despite
their obvious entertainment value, each and every story is a lie.
Yup, you heard right. They’re all lies we tell ourselves because we don’t know how to
just "be." Didn’t God
say, "I am that I am"? S/he
didn’t say, "I’m a mover and a shaker and I have a type A personality,"
did s/he? Maybe we could take
a lesson from the mineral, vegetable or animal kingdoms. When was the last time a ficus enlisted the help of a career
counselor? Did you ever meet a
dog that thought he had low self-esteem?
Have you ever seen a rock at Weight Watchers? Of course not, they know who they are and how to "be."
Thanks to our "higher" brain functioning, we humans, on the other
hand, think we need to be something, be somebody, be somewhere.
But we don’t.
Relax
for a few minutes and answer the following questions:
-
Who
would you be without your thoughts, your judgments, your fears, your
worries, your loves, your hates, your goals?
-
What would the
world look like if you weren’t attached to any idea about how things
should be?
-
How would you
spend your time if you had nothing you had to do?
-
Where would you
live if you knew you were God?
-
When would you
start to enjoy yourself if you knew you would never die?
Now, get out there and
act like the little piece of God that you are. There’s nothing stopping you but your stories.
