Although there is no Oscar given for the best spiritual movie, we started thinking about which films would fall into this category if it did exist. Our definition of a spiritual movie is a bit different than what you might expect. We’re not necessarily looking for angels, or George Burns playing God. To us, a spiritual movie is one that offers some insight into how the universe works, and how we are all connected. So applying this guideline to whatever movies we can think of at the moment, here’s our list of the top ten. 10. Stairway to Heaven (1946) – the will to live is all that matters. 9. The Sixth Sense (1999) – we don’t know that we’re dead, dwelling on earthly problems keeps our spirit earth bound. 8. Wings of Desire (1987) – if an angel is willing to become human for love, then love must be divine. 7. The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999) – Elmo has to learn to share. 6. Little Buddha (1994) – the life of Buddha, a great story. 5. Dead Man Walking (1995) – forgiveness is freedom. 4. The Green Mile (1999) – we all deal with the same energy, some of us just know how to use it better than others. 3. Life is Beautiful (1997) – talk about creating your own reality---this man saved his own son from emotional devastation using laughter and imagination. 2. The Matrix (1999) – life is an illusion, need we say more? 1. Groundhog Day (1993) – if we don’t conquer our mistakes we’ll keep repeating them. |
