I’m
not depressed. There’s nothing wrong with being depressed, God
knows I’ve been best friends with that horseman of the Apocalypse.
I’m simply a bit disgusted with what’s been going on in the world
lately. If you knew me in person, you’d know that I’m an
optimist, a positive person, one of those weirdoes who believes that there
is more good than evil in the world. So who and what am I pissed off
at? Thanks for asking and feel free to make your own list if
you’re so inspired. Ok, here goes:
-
The
impending war with Iraq (Whoever heard of advertising a surprise
attack on one’s enemy? It’s more like an infomercial of the
Bush family’s greatest hits. See number 2, below.)
-
George
W. Bush
-
Bill
Clinton (I’m not stupid. The democrats are just as messed up
as the Republicans.)
-
The
anniversary of 9/11 (I live a mile from ground zero and I cried for
weeks about this tragedy, but when was the last time we commemorated
all of the people the US has annihilated in the course of the last 200
years?)
-
All
the big wigs at Enron, Worldcom, etc, etc, etc (Thank God, I’m a
struggling writer and don’t have a 401 (k).)
-
The
war on terrorism (Where’s Bin Laden? Thanks to CNN, at least
we have more Al Quaeda tapes about how Osama wanted to blow us all up
to keep us in high gear for the anniversary of 9/11. Excuse me,
but aren’t we well aware by now that there is a growing segment of
the world’s population that hates us?)
-
The
war on drugs (It’s really working, don’t you think? Now,
pass me the Viagra.)
-
This
summer’s non-stop media fear festival regarding the abduction of
Elizabeth Smart (I have a child and I empathize deeply with that
girl’s family. But how is fear going to find that girl or keep
any child safe?)
There’s more, but that’ll
do. The point is, sometimes this world sucks. I know that the
world is a reflection of me and lately I’ve been purging outmoded
concepts right and left, so it’s not surprising I’m a bit ticked off.
But sometimes the spiritual path sucks too, because it’s not a quick
fix. Of course love, compassion, faith, hope, and kindness are the
solution to all the world’s problems. But so is being honest about
what’s going on in the world and inside our hearts and learning to think
for ourselves. It’s clear that the truth is not going to come from
those well-scrubbed, smiley-faced evening news announcers. But,
it’s not going to come from a book, an alternative healer, or a guru
either. The truth is hiding somewhere behind both the secular and
the sacred bullshit. I guess I’ll renew my quest for the truth,
yet again. I don’t really have a choice. It’s obvious I
still have a lot of concepts to overthrow.
