9/5/01 I'm
a good person, |
|
Because,
believe it or not, it's not how good you are that determines what you get
in life. "Good"
is a relative term anyway. Ten-to-one
if you're spending most of your time trying to be a saint, you're probably
just playing it safe. As
difficult as it can be to accept, keeping everyone else happy at the
expense of our own well being is not the recipe for a fulfilling life, and
here's the real shocker---it's not "spiritual."
The spiritual path leads to freedom, not never-ending obligation
and compliance. It goes
without saying that we should treat other people fairly with love and
compassion. But shouldn't we
also treat ourselves the same way? Being
overly good is a trap that puts us in long-term victim mode.
And we all know that game too well.
It's time to break free of the people-pleasing routine.
Do what you really want to do. Other people might not like it at
first, but they'll get over it. Hey,
they might even start doing what they really want to do too.
Now that's spiritual. |
