Chances are, if we
don’t like something, we are connected to it, otherwise we wouldn’t have had
much of a reaction to it in the first place. Any strong opinion or
aversion is a sign that we have a concept tied to that particular subject.
And since our experiences in this world are guided by our concepts, then it’s
pretty damn practical to understand how our dislikes affect our lives just as
our likes do. Once we understand the role our fear, prejudice or
condemnation plays in keeping an undesirable situation alive, that situation
loses its grip on us and sets us free. So the next time you see something
rude, crude or completely un-you, think about why it bothers you so much, and
realize that you are connected to the situation by virtue of the fact that you
noticed it. Then decide if it’s something you can help to improve, or if
it’s really none of your business and you need to let it go. Before you
know it, you’ll be seeing past your original gut reaction to the essence
behind everything that gives each of us the right to be different people with
different opinions, yet unites us all.
