You
know all those annoying little aches and pains we have?
As much as we want to ignore them, what’s the first thing we all
long to do when we have one?
Complain about it!
C’mon---you know it’s true---there’s perverse pleasure in
proclaiming, "I burned my tongue," "My head is about to
explode," or "Damn!
A paper cut."
When we’re wounded, we want to lay claim to our pain.
It doesn’t matter that the whole
time we hold the idea in our head, we feel the pain more acutely
than if we would have just forgotten about it.
It doesn’t matter that while we deliberately prolong our
suffering we miss out on thinking more helpful or happier thoughts.
Maybe we just don’t realize the consequences of our griping.
But what about the great number of us who believe that what we
focus our thoughts on is what life brings us?
What’s our excuse for knowingly throwing our mental energy at
something that’s bad for us?
Let’s face it, sometimes complaining gives us more pleasure than
letting go of life’s injustices.
But are we prepared to pay the penalty?
Well, maybe if it’s a paper cut or a headache, but when the
consequences of prolonging, or even creating something to complain about
become more than we bargained for, we need to start taking pleasure in
something more productive.
So the next time life seems to grate on us, consider that the
solution is obscured only by our unwillingness to find one, lest we have
to stop our moaning and actually enjoy life!
