The Spiritual ChicksSM Speak Out!
Can we answer our own prayers?

We were asked this question by a reader as a follow up to the notion that we are all infused with the great creative power of life. It's an interesting idea and after bouncing it around for a while, here's what we've come up with. Sure---but, we've got to put on our universal power uniform first. Kind of like Clark Kent running into a phone booth and coming out with that big "S" on his chest. But in this case, the "S" stands for "Spiritual Being."

When our prayers, dreams, or desires go unanswered it's not because we've been "bad," or because there's some outside dictator of the cosmos to whom we haven't sucked up quite enough. It's because we're praying with our minds and not our hearts. Our minds tend to get hung up on things that separate us from the One Life. I must preserve my job, my health, my family. And that's fine, because the mind's job is to keep us going as individuals. But when it comes to answering prayers, or really making things happen in a grand way, there's no way around it, we've got to connect with our alter ego---the real self, behind the individual, that is part of the One Life. Our jobs are saved when we acknowledge not only our daily employment, but our role in the universe, as a contributor to life. Our families are safe when we realize that we are all eternal beings.

Now, we know what some of you are wondering. Does that mean I have to give up on my individual desires? Not necessarily. It's the difference between wanting our boss to give us a raise and focusing on the abundance of life. The first attitude is pretty limiting, but the latter makes us less fearful, more daring and opens us up to solutions and opportunities that the mind may have never thought possible. The power of prayer or positive thinking lies in our innate connection to the One Life---this is not a mental exercise. When we trust our hearts and act out of faith and love we align ourselves with the only power that can get the job done.
